Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT) is delighted to be partnering with TAQA UK for the AFCCT Community Cup.

The Community Cup, which involves four city primary schools from the Harlaw Academy Associated Schools Group, aims to encourage young people from Broomhill, Ferryhill, Hanover Street and Kaimhill schools to participate in community and social actions, as well as football Fair Play fixtures, to win points.

Community actions can include community litter picks or visiting local care homes, while social actions range from school-based environmental projects, creating anti-bullying campaigns or even starting a new lunchtime club. Each school earns points for its actions and the one with the highest total will be crowned the Community Cup champions.

As part of the programme, AFCCT also delivers educational workshops in each school with selected partners in areas like the environment and science, to increase knowledge and highlight potential career opportunities.

To kick off the programme, all the young people were given the opportunity to enter a competition to win an exclusive matchday experience at Pittodrie when Aberdeen played Ross County in March. Pupils were asked to design a logo for the project that symbolised both the partnership between AFCCT and TAQA UK, and the aims of the programme. The winning school, Kaimhill, will see its logo used across the programme and all AFCCT media channels.

Paul Davidson, AFCCT Community Cup Coordinator is delighted to have TAQA UK supporting the project saying: “I’m delighted that we have been able to develop and launch this project in collaboration with TAQA UK. The Community Cup will allow us to provide great opportunity to the participating schools, encouraging and facilitating lots of community engagement.

“Pupils will gain a vast wealth of knowledge through the workshops delivered by both AFCCT and our external partners. I can’t wait to see the variety of community and social actions submitted and being harnessed by the project structure.

“Through the events we’re looking forward to aiding the transition of P7s at the schools as they prepare for Harlaw Academy. This will allow pupils to meet peers from other schools and start to bond friendships ahead of S1.

I am extremely excited to see and embrace the positive competitiveness between each school throughout the project”.

TAQA UK’s Decomissioning and Projects Director and Corporate Social Committee Leadership Team member, David Wilson said: “We’re delighted to support AFCCT’s Community Cup and it’s great to see all four schools getting off to a flying start.

“Sport plays such an important role in development, and the social and community actions – as well as the workshops that are part of this project – mean that young people get a rounded learning experience covering aspects from Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects to lifesaving Defibrillator skills.

“I look forward to hearing more over the coming weeks on how the pupils are participating, and to being part of the celebration day at the end of the project.”
